COVID-19 Quarantine: Day 5 - 3/20/2020

Day 5...

Once again, woke up before my alarm.

I set my alarm for 7:45 am to call the DMV at 8:00 am when they opened, but I woke up at 5:50 instead.

As always, I strolled over my way towards the kitchen, set up my Cosori and Chemex to make coffee out of Caveman Coffee grinds. I think I have 1 of 5 pounds left now.

On this Day 5, I didn't do the workout in the morning. I decided to go a little off-schedule and plus, I didn't want to wake David up again.

So I started to work right away on updating a document of the NFL Project I am working on.

Then around 7:22 am, I received a text from Taylor. In short, it said there will be an mandatory national quarantine announced in the next 48 to 72 hours.

I sent this to a couple of people I know, two of them being my sisters. One of them came back and told me a person she knows said it's not true.

Regardless of if it's true or not, my belief is always prepare for the worse. Get ahead and stay ahead because if you don't, you already lost. One of the valuable lessons I learned while playing collegiate baseball.

At 8:00 am I called the DMV to see if they were actually open after the news that came out on Day 4. I waited about 3 minutes until a representative picked up the phone and told me in the most stale voice, "Business as usual".

So I showered and got ready quickly as I had made an appointment at 9:00 am on Day 4. As I was heading out the door, I forgot to send myself the screen shot of the receipt I took on my MacBook to my phone. I looked at the image again to double check, to only find out my appointment was for 9:00 am on Friday, June 18th, 2020.

All I saw when I made the appointment was, "9:00 am", "Friday", "Jun".

Way to go, Jun.

I disappointedly, like Day 4 walking back to my car at the DMV, walked back into Casa Del Dova-Endo and sat at the dining room table.

I called my mom because she had called me right at 8:00 am when I was calling the DMV and I had to decline the call. She was talking about the possible nationwide mandatory quarantine.

As we were talking, she got mad at me because of the tone of voice I talk to her in.

I really have to work on that.

So I came back and started working on a personal project I have been working on for the time being (this), and David had just woke up for the day.

David made me think of all the technicians (replay operators, camera operators, audio mixers, techinical directors, etc) I've worked with for the last 4 years since I start a position in remote productions at Fox. I reached out to a handful from the NFL crew first. Most of them had the same answer: safe and healthy, but unemployed.

I wish I could help out somehow but I feel helpless this time around.

After I got some work and my personal project done and had opened an iced milk coffee at 10:29 am, it was noon. I decided it would be a good time to do the workout.

The Workout Of the Day was...

Added Warm Up:
15 Calf Raises
10 Reverse Lunges (w/ rotation & stretch)
5 Seal To Downward Dog Stretch

Progressive Volume Work:
Complete 4 rounds for quality of:
15 Hollow Rocks
20 Push Ups
25 Squats

Progressive Tempo Run:
Run 9 Minutes Out
Return with a Negative Split (<9 Minutes)

The first 2 parts of the workout, I decided to do it on the small 10x7 patio Casa Del Dova-Endo has. David decided to do the workout too but we decided to go to Playa Del Rey beach for his entire workout and the last part of the workout for me.

We drove down to the beach and I started my run as David got the first part of the workout going. As I was running, which I definitely went way too hard in the first 9 minutes since I almost passed out during the last part of my run.

As I was running on the bike path of the beach, I saw a family playing beach volleyball and another family sitting down on the dunes of the beach looking out to the ocean. Just not 24 hours prior, the mayor mandated to people to stay home, but outdoor activities like walking hiking, running, cycling while practice safe social-distancing are ok. But I saw a group of people still hanging out like nothing was going on. Maybe they didn't hear the big news? I have a feeling it won't be too long before it becomes more of a law.

I finished my run in 17:41, just under 18 minutes. Like I said, I almost passed out (Thanks Logan).

And yes, of course I used canned soups as weighs to do my calf raises and check if my arms were vertical during the push ups.

Campbell Chicken Noodle Soup, if you were curious.

After David finished his workout, we just went to back to Casa Del Dova-Endo, where I started to an extra credit workout via Instagram post with Colton Waltner, a member at Deuce Gym that I am in a strength training class with and a former 2017 MLB Draft Pick by the Minnesota Twins. It's something to keep us sane and pass the time. I pretty much look forward to it every day. Weekends might be rest days, but we'll see.

I called my mom again because she called me as I was crossing the finish line on the run. I had to quickly decline her call because I wanted to get my time for the run. I think I submitted my time by one or two seconds more. Thanks mom.

The conversation was about her filing for unemployment, both her and my youngest sister that works at a Japanese barbecue restaurant on Lincoln Blvd in Venice. My mom had some questions so I tried to answer the best I could.

After I hung up the phone, I sat there for quite sometime, the reality sinking in more and more.

To take my mind off of it, I decided to cook breakfast for lunch. 2 eggs sunny side up, 3 breakfast sausages, and broccoli florets. Breakfast is great anytime. It's my fall back to when I don't know what to eat. I remember one night in middle school, after playing in a baseball tournament, I was sitting in a half circle booth seating next to my coach at Denny's as I was looking at the dinner menu. He looked at me saying, "You always get breakfast at Denny's for breakfast, lunch or dinner." Ever since then, if I didn't know what to eat, I would make some sort of breakfast.

After eating lunch, I pulled out a cup of coffee I had been refrigerating for a couple of days now around 3 pm and I decided to make a simple edit with the video I took of the workout on Adobe Premiere. First, I wanted to learn how to put in effects, like a linear wipe, so I YouTube'd a video on it and followed along but didn't for some reason, it wasn't working on my MacBook so I put a pin on it. Hope to live to see another day with it.

After I edited the video, which was nothing too special, I decided to FaceTime one of my good friends and former cubical-mate at Fox, Jennifer. She's a biggest Patriots and Tom Brady fan (big New England sports fan in general) and I hadn't asked her about the big news of Brady going to Tampa Bay. She was in her hometown in Rhode Island after travels for I want to say about 3 weeks with he US Women's National Soccer Team (sorry if I got my facts wrong Jen!). Her office, based in Chicago was closed down due to this pandemic, so she decided to go back home to her family before who knows when she could and would be able to see them again.

It was good catching up with her. I'm very thankful for our friendship and that we kept up with each other when I left the Fox Sports studio group to go work on the road.

But I had to hang up on her, and told her that earlier in the day, Taylor had mentioned to me Del Rey Deli, a deli down the street from our complex, was still having a Fried Chicken Sandwich Pop-Up. Every time they had one of those, it would be when I was on the road for work, so I had to take advantage of it one time.

So I called in at 5:46 pm, a minute after they were taking phone calls. Busy.

I hung up and called right back immediately. Busy.

I waited 30 seconds to call back, and it finally rang. I ordered two chicken sandwiches. And I would say, if you like fried chicken sandwiches, you should try it when they have their pop-ups. But when I finished both of them in about 5 minutes, I immediately felt the sodium rushing to my face. It was definitely worth it.

As I was eating my fried chicken sandwiches, Logan, the owner of Deuce Gym post a video on his Instagram account. I almost shedded tears but I held it back. He was mentioning about how businesses and companies won't survive this whole situation. I remember texting with him on Monday and mentioning this to me. My heart dropped to the inner core of the earth.

I sat on the couch with a full stomach and watched David turn on and play Call Of Duty, but I decided finish up my blog for Day 5.

5 Days in the books, 28 more until April 17th, and maybe more. Let's hope they find a vaccine for it sooner than later. Better yet, find a way to make those days count.

Let's see what Day 6 brings us.
